England started the series against South Africa as underdogs but in the first innings at Lord's saw off the potent pace attack in some style with Pietersen scoring his first 100 in a Test match against the country of his birth and Ian Bell falling on 199! Unfortunately England could not press home there advantage and the match was drawn. What followed was a wonderful series of two equally matched sides going toe to toe in the heat of the battle, England with the returning hero Flintoff and a new captain in Pietersen for the Oval Test lost the series 2-1. In a reverse of fortunes the home side completely battered the South Africans in the ODI series running out easy 4-0 winners, with only the weather perhaps preventing a whitewash.
